Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 6:1–7

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Epistle – Romans 11:33–36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – John 3:1–15

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter.

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” ... “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Lector: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.

Blessed be the Holy Trinity

Today we celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity—one God in three persons. In Isaiah’s vision, the angels cry "Holy, Holy, Holy," acknowledging the triune nature of the Lord of Hosts. St. Paul marvels at the unsearchable wisdom of God, from whom and through whom all things exist. Finally, Jesus reveals to Nicodemus the necessity of being born of water and the Spirit, a work of the Trinity that brings us into the Kingdom of God.
